Lecture 1 – Introduction to the Periodic Table

Periodic Table:

Periodic table is a tabular arrangement of all the elements known to mankind. It is read from left to right like a book. It consist of Metals on the left and the metallic character of element decreases towards the right, with non-metals and gases on the right.

Figure 1 shows the table:

Different colours are shown to differentiate the different families of elements from one another. Each family has its own distinctive properties, while the members of the same family show similar properties.

The elements are arranged in the order of increasing atomic number in order of their Group and Period numbers.
