Nylon:
Nylon is a synthetic polymer with many uses. It is also called as a poly amide fiber, because of the amide linkage.
Industrial
manufacture of Nylon:
Nylon is industrially manufactured by the reaction between
dicarboxylic acid and diamine.
Figure 20:
Water is a by-product of this reaction and this reaction is an example of Condensation Polymerization.
Note that the –CO and the –NH in the amide linkage are on
alternate sides. Both cannot be on the same side.
Uses of Nylon:
Nylon is used in:
- Clothing
- Curtains
- Bedsheets
- Parachutes
- Shoes
- Handbags
- Bristles of toothbrushes
- Ropes
- Fishing lines
