Terylene:

Terylene is a synthetic polyester. It is ester in nature because of the repeating units of ester linkage.

Industrial manufacture of Terylene:

Terylene is industrially manufactured by the reaction between dicarboxylic acid and dialcohol at 250°C, low pressures and antimony oxide as catalyst.

Figure 21:

Water is a by-product of this reaction and this reaction is an example of Condensation Polymerization.

Uses of Terylene:

Terylene is used to make:
  1. PVC Terylene thread pipes
  2. Clothing
  3. Parachutes
  4. Ropes
  5. Plastics
