Conversion of sea
water to drinking water:
Sea water can be converted to drinking water using simple
distillation in large distillation plants. In this process, the sea water is boiled,
the vapours are condensed and stored separately. This process separates the
water content of the salty sea water. This process is called Desalination.
Figure 11 shows a block diagram of the desalination process
Figure 11:
Brine is a by-product of the desalination process. It is a
concentrated solution of sodium chloride. It is electrolyzed to yield sodium
hydroxide, hydrogen gas and chlorine.
