Advantages of
Synthetic over natural fibers:
Synthetic fibers are:
- Cheaper
- Lighter
- More durable
- Water resistant
- Strain resistant
Non-Biodegradable:
The term non-biodegradable is used to define
substances/materials that cannot be decomposed by nature or they may take
centuries to decompose.
Most synthetic macromolecules, like plastic, polyethene,
polyester and polyamides are non-biodegradable in nature. Such materials are
therefore, an environmental hazard. They adversely affect the land of the
planet earth in many ways. For example:
- They reduce the porosity of soil, rendering it infertile to support vegetation and hence, life.
- Plastic bags are eaten by cattle along with garbage, thus enter the food chain or harm the animal
- Contaminates ground water
- Pollutes air on burning
